Capita, The biggest provider of IT services and software to the public sector, Despite ~£2bn in revenue per year which equates to roughly 50% of the public sector business in the UK, suffered a power outage in one of it’s datacentres on Wednesday (24/05/2017) Knocking out a number of councils and NHS authorities.
It is believed there was a power failure and the generators at their West Malling facility failed, therefore once the UPS batteries were drained the whole facility went dark.
At the time of writing some services are still down as due to the age of the power infrastructure, it is believed parts have had to be sourced from overseas before remedial work could commence.
This highlights the need for a robust DR / Backup plan, if it warrants it (we’re pretty sure the public sector organisations who lost service down to this outage, would agree) a remote DR site.
